Lotto Cross Cup - Belgium
Carl Hardman was part of the Great Britain team running in the Lotto Cross Cup. Carl finished a very creditable 13th place with a time of 29:34 over 9.55k. Well done Carl!
Armagh International 5k
Thursday 9th February 2012 saw the Armagh International 5k. Representing the North of England team were Salford Harriers Joe Bailey 14:41 just 3 seconds outside his PB and also Josh Tighe who with a time of 14:56 saw a huge 29 second improvement on his PB! Well done to you both!
Alsager 5
Bad weather saw many races cancelled over the weekend but a fair few hardy runners turned out for the Alsager 5. Despite the treacherous conditions Salford results were Ben Riddell 11th 25:23, Joe Bailey 22nd 25:42 and Josh Tighe 26:01.
Northern Cross Country - 28th January 2012
'Never in the field of human conflict has so much been done by so many for so few medals'. With the battle of Pontefract raging at its most fiercest, the fighting intense, the enemy immense, it would need an effort of Churchillian inspired bravado to return unyielding and unbowed. But the lads were F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C, each and every one giving it their all towards the cause and to be rewarded with a much merited bronze medal winning performance in the closest, most hard fought and thrilling team race for many a long year. In finishing order, 9th Carl Hardman - a mere three weeks training following injury was all the Stalybridge streak needed to secure his second top ten placing in three years, really sums up Carl's true capabilities. Andi Jones - class is permanent, our two time winner will surely soon be back to his imperious best, dug in well for 16th. Tom Cornthwaite 22nd - another class act, his first of many more medals in the red and white vest. Joe Bailey 32nd - his best cross country run in ages despite an injury disrupted preparation, a potential future individual medallist . Josh Tighe 47th - would not have figured in many of our predictions to be a 'counter', was a total revelation however and proved us all wrong, can and will only get better. Ben Riddell 55th - when the going got tough on that last lap, he showed true grit and resolve to claim that vitally important sixth counter spot, well done Ben.
The back up from the rest of the mens squad was no less important from the clubs perspective and the following also played their part in the proceedings. Phil Leybourne 76th, Nathan Kilcourse 78th, Rob Hughes 88th, John Brown 92nd, Dave Hudson 130th, Mike Grace 134th, Simon Bruton 161st, Howard Mead 186th, Tony Taylor 191st, Mark Seed 314th, Paul Birkett 243rd, Rob Francis 546th, Tommy Temple 568th and Barry Pearce 605th.
Following a promising run by Callum Corneille in the Junior Mens event, the sizzling Salford Ladies set the tone for a dramatic afternoons racing with equally inspiring results as the men. Tess Walker had another 'stormer' to finish in 10th for the second year in succession. Bev Jenkins, as usual, gave her all for a gutsy 25th placing closely followed in by Hayley Kuter, who, despite being short of race sharpness showed that she too could very soon challenge at a higher level. The Girls marvellous effort was deserving, at the very least, to challenge for a team medal, unluckily, it was not to be however. But in Sport of course there's always another day and another chance. 'And this is certainly not the end, it is not even the beginning of the end. It is perhaps the end of the beginning' .

South East Lancs XC League
Report on the South East Lancs XC League can be found on the Race Reports link.
LAST WEEKEND
GRAVY PUD FELL RACE, TINTWISTLE - A surprisingly large field in view of the pretty dreadful weather conditions - 168 finishers which is believed a record. Three Salford Harriers in the field and all performed creditably. Carl Hardman was a comfortable race winner and looked good. Those prolific (and improving) racers, Howard Mead and Mike Grace, were out again less than 24 hours after toeing the line in Wythenshawe Park. Howard placed 5th and Mike 11th. MANCHESTER UNITED FOUNDATION 5K SANTA DASH - Our star Santa, Paul Simons, got his festive garb out again and was the winner. No other details at the moment.
CHRISTMAS HANDICAP
The Club's Christmas Handicap is to be held on Saturday 17 December 2011. Two laps of Boggart Hole Clough - Start time is 2.00 pm Oakbank Avenue Entrance. 'BRING A PRIZE TAKE A PRIZE'. Refreshments and prize giving to be held at the Bluebell Hotel, Moston Lane.

Bupa Great South Run
Representing Salford Harriers and the North of England, Tess Walker and Joe Bailey were running this fast ten miler on the south coast. Joe, running his first 10 mile race, had a cracking race finishing 12th in 49.18. Joe was on for a sub 49 clocking but this wasn't to happen today with the windy conditions in the closing stages. Tess Walker finished 16th in 1 hour and 16 seconds.
Well done on represnting the club in this event.
Carole Bowness
Salford Harriers extend their deepest sympathy and thoughts to Roe and his family on the loss of Carole who was such a lovely, lovely lady and will be very much missed by all who knew her.
Carole’s Funeral is to take place on Tuesday 1 November – 1.30 at Blackley Crem. Roe has requested no flowers but his intention is to set up a web site for donations to The Christie.
Round Up
As well as our runners' fine running in Heaton Park last Saturday, there were some impressive performances elsewhere by club members.
John Brown won the Passing Clouds Fell Race (9 m/1800') at Leek.
Keith Boardman (50 next month) won the Autumn Breaker 10K at Blackpool in 36:48.
Paul Savage placed 27th in 73:57 in the BUPA Great Birmingham Run Half Marathon. A PB, I think.
The previous weekend (16/10), Pumlani Bangani was 4th in the Bridlington Half Marathon in 72:44, a SB.
Congratulations to all our members on their recent commendable results. Roy Profitt
54th Trofeo Vanoni Mountain Relay Race
On Sunday 23rd October Andi Jones was in action representing the Snowdon Team (and Salford Harriers) at the 54th running of this popular Italian Mountain Relay Race. Jones was selected for the race from finishing first at the International Snowdon Race in July. The first three British runners home in the Snowdon race represent the Snowdon race as Llanberis is twinned with Morbegno where the relay is staged. The other two athletes on the team this year were Robbie Simpson and Murray Starin, both Scottish athletes who have both represented GB at Mountain Running or orienteering.
Jones was first off in the relay and came home a little down on what he was expecting in a time of 31.11. Jones said after his leg 'I found it hard, I got out quick but really struggled on the very steep, technical downhill section. I am pleased with my climb time but need to work on my downhill running'. Handing over to Murray in 8th, Murray ran a strong leg and finished in 4th place in a time of 30.56. Robbie was brinigng the team home on leg three and worked hard to maintain 4th place at the summit and came down the mountain very well to overtake two teams and finish second. Robbies individual time was 30.53. The team was very pleased with the second place overall.
Write up as it appears on the website mud, sweat and tears.
National 6 & 4 Stage Championships - 15th October 2011
Very well done to all of our runners and a special pat on the back must go to our team supremos, Sean and Tess, who have both played a huge part in the club’s continued renaissance. Expert observations too from Sean on getting performances into their proper perspective. Last year we were 28th (mens) and 16th (ladies) in this race, that’s a tremendous leap forward in an event that certainly does not, both historically and factually, highlight the overall strengths of the club. So roll on the cross country, already getting quietly excited about the Pontefract cakes at the Northern XC in deepest January......

Our AGM will be held on Monday 24th October 2011. The venue is our Committee Room at our Headquarters at the rear of the Bluebell Hotel, Manchester M40 5AF. Please support your Club.

NORTH WEST COUNTIES RELAYS - 17th September 2011
Well done to everyone in the 3 women's and 5 men's teams ran the relays. Thanks also to our travelling supporters, including new lad Tom Cornthwaite who, despite having run in the world mountain champs. last week, was prepared to step in if we ended up short on the D team!! Not a bad reserve to have!!!The girls Greater Manchester 'A' bagged bronze overall and 2nd place in the GM race, then the lads Greater Manchester 'A' won their event with a comfortable lead of well over a minute. Joe Bailey got fastest leg of the day, 16.06, with Andi Jones - running way out in front alone on second leg - just behind that ahead of Steve Vernon (Stockport)'s 16.17. The first Lancs. team in this event for a decade also ran strongly, just missing out on the Lancs. medals. Sean Cordell
After a gap of quite a few months since the last relay Saturdays North West road version came at just the right time for the harriers. With a number of fresh faces it was the perfect opportunity to bond the new and not so new in the cut and thrust of lively team competition. It’s great to report that everyone seemed to gel together superbly well. I'm sure I speak for us all in wishing all of our new members a long, happy and fruitful stay at the famous old club. As Sean has already reported we had a very good day returning with a clutch of medals (and a full set of hubcaps), from the delightful Sefton Park which also sets us up nicely for next weekend’s Northerns, where of course honours will be much harder to come by, or as the yanks would say - ' it’s a whole new ball game ' however with the great spirit within the club now I’m sure we'll be there or thereabouts. World Mountain Running Trial
Today (Saturday 13th August 2011) saw the trial race for the World Mountain Running Championships. The race was staged at Witton Park, Blackburn which most of us will know from hosting the Northern Cross Country Championships. This years World Championships is being held for the first time in Albania and the course designed at Witton Park was done so to replicate the course at the championships. This race was also the final race in the three race UKA McCain Mountain Running Championships. Andi Jones was stopped from winning the league by James McMullum for THH after a good battle between James, Andi and Chris Smith. Entering the final KM of the race Andi headed James but James came out the better on the long steep downhill finish to take the win. Jones after the race said he was pleased with his performance and is currently focusing his training on preparation for the Berlin Marathon at the end of September which is all going to plan. Jones added that even though he had a few easier days prior to the race today his training had remained high volume prior to this. He congratulated all who ran in the trial today and wished them good luck at the Championships. Andi turned down selection for the World Championships as the timing of the race is too close to the Marathon.
Also running in the trials today were Salford road and XC members Tom Cornthwaite and Josh Tighe. Tom and Josh represent Northumberland Fell Runners on the fells and both had strong performances. Tom finished an excellent 5th place and gave his all in the race to hopefully secure himself a place on the World team and Commonwealth team. Josh, recovering from a niggle in his hip finished a creditable 22nd. These two athletes should be strong additions to our Road and XC teams over the coming seasons.

Martin Cox wins 4th in a row
Despite the organisers of the Glacier 3000 forking out large sums of cash for half a dozen top German and Swiss mountain runners, 41 year old Martin Cox, Salford Harriers, triumphed for an unprecedented 4th year in succession. Martin has been training hard this summer and had planned to do less racing focusing on some key races. This plan is obviously working for Martin.
The same weekend Billy Burns was 3rd at Thyon Dixence.
It's good to see both Martin and Billy putting in great performances out in Europe on the mountains. The club congratulates them both on their strong performances and wishes them good luck for future races.
SUMMER HANDICAP 2011
Our Club Summer Handicap takes place on Thursday 18th August. Two laps of Boggart Hole Clough - the start time is 7.30 pm (Oakbank Avenue entrance) the clubhouse will be open from 7.00 pm. BRING A PRIZE TAKE A PRIZE. Prize giving and refreshments at the Bluebell Hotel, Moston Lane. Guests are welcome.
John Tarrant
In post-war Buxton, Tarrant had taken up some amateur boxing and got paid £17 expenses. He naively declared this payment when trying to join Salford Harriers, which meant he was given an instantaneous lifetime ban from all domestic and international competitions. So, Tarrant used to gatecrash races all over the world and the papers nicknamed him 'The Ghost Runner'.
We are invited to an event at Waterstone's Deansgate in Manchester on Thursday 18th August at 7pm. Bill Jones, the author of a new book called The Ghost Runner: The Tragedy of the Many They Couldn't Stop, will be giving a talk about John Tarrant's life. There will be opportunity to ask Bill questions and get a signed copy of the book
Joe Sizzling at Sizzler
The inform Joe Bailey sizzled round the Sale Sizzler on Thursday evening narrowly missing the course record. Joe won the race from Rochdales Matt Proctor in 14.38 while Proctor finished in 14.45. Ben Fish of Blackburn Harriers finished the top three positions in 15.11. Salfords Ben Riddell was 4th in 15.17. Many other Salford athletes competed in the second Sale Sizzler of the summer and full results can be found here. This was a race in Salfords club championships which is now hotting up with several athletes in contention for winning the series.
Gravy 6
A strong showing from Salford Harriers at the Gravy 6 today (Sunday 17th July) resulted in Salford Harrier athletes winning the mens and ladies race and the mens team. Ever imporving Dan McGrath was first athlete home well clear of second place Darren Moran. Tess Walker was first lady home. The results saw a slightly reduced number in the field from last year which race organisers are putting down to the poor weather conditions. Race organisers Northernboyslovegravy thank Salford Harriers for their support and their help with marshalling the event. Full results are now available here.
Coxy and the Mountains
In fine action on the mountains last weekend was Martin Cox who finished 4th (2nd M40) in the Zermatt Marathon in Switzerland.
His time 3:17:48. Winner did 3:09:40.6.
Not a race for the faint-hearted. The race involves 1900m (6230 ft) of climbing, finishing at an altitude of 2585m (8480 ft).
Well done, Martin!
Representing Salford Harriers and Great Britain at the European Mountain Running Championships in Bursa, Turkey was Andi Jones. Andi finished 7th in the race and first British Athlete. This was his joint highest finish in these championships. Jones said 'The race was tough, very warm and very steep.' Jones was very complimentray of the messages he had received from members of Salford Harriers about his performance in the race. Thislink takes you to an interview with Andi on the European Athletics website.

2011 - National Masters Relays
They came, they saw and they conquered. The Harriers reached top form at Saturdays National Masters relays. Schooled as we are in the art of relay running it was still perhaps our best ever day in this event. Staged as always at the road racing very own theatre of dreams, Sutton Park, the place of course is steeped in tradition, many of Britain’s finest having plied their trade here in the past - Foster, Stewart, Bedford, Moorcroft, Radcliffe, Farah to name but a few. O/55 MEN – GOLD - As the course prefects assembled the first leg runners in an orderly line, we all sensed something special brewing with what looked on paper a formidable quartet. And they didn’t disappoint with a tremendous performance. 1st up Mike Wakefield (18.32) gave us the start we wanted with a solid foundation then Stan Owen (17.32) brought the team right up to second, 3rd leg the returning Eric Williams (16.43) ran a belter to streak into a lead we were not to surrender. With the new European Champion to come it was, of course, virtually a foregone conclusion and Mike Deegan duly obliged with his speedy 16.17. The result a comprehensive victory by a full 2min 32secs - untouchable. O/35 MEN - SILVER. An excellent all round team effort brought us mightily close to emulating the seniors here. In leg order - 1 Head pupil and captain fantastic Dave Lockett (16.02), 2 Dave Townsend (17.26), 3 Phil West (16.52), 4 Phil Leybourne (15.43) and up into the top six, 5 James Williams (16.03), top 3 now !, 6 Dave Hudson (16.38) into 2nd come on lads you can do it !! 7 Darren Moran (16.44) and finally an excellent 15.11 by mighty Martin Cox on the last leg. A terrific display by all the lads, alas Cambuslang played the role of school bully to perfection here so fair play to them. O/65 MEN - 5TH - Vinnie Murphy 22.02, Sid Sacks 21.47, Roe Bowness 20.52. Oh so agonisingly close to those medals, just 16 seconds away from a deserved bronze, a grand effort from the 'three amigos'. 0/35 LADIES - 10TH. Bev Jenkins 17.31 (3rd best of race), Julie Cook 18.41, new girl Diane Hooper 22.22 and Denise Wakefield 23.01. Well done ladies, a good performance. O45 MEN - 22ND - Ian Johnson 19.49, Ronnie Warrender 19.20, Tommy Temple 20.58, Tommy Daniels 20.53, Dennis Moran 22.31 and Stan Curran 19.57. Tremendous effort. Overall an exceptional day all round and makes one look forward even now to next year’s event.

Northern 12 & 6 Stage Road Relays - 20th March 2011
Come gather round people wherever you roam and admit that the Athletes around you have grown. Yes siree the super Salford ladies certainly grew in stature today grabbing well deserved bronze medals. Set beside the grounds of the Catterick Army base the girls gave a battling display from start to finish whilst proving reports of their demise after recent cross country events, were in fact, just a load of old barracks. Fine runs all round with Tess getting a fine start and coming back 4th in 12.48 followed by Anna taking the lead with an identical time, next up Tania maintained the momentum with 14.27 then Sam keeping us in the hunt with 14.11. On the 5th leg Hayley pulled out a swift 13.14 effort nicely setting up Bev to finish off the good work with a redoubtable 13.06 anchor leg. The Ladies squad is looking really good once again and this result should inspire them to soldier on to even more success. The Mens A team ran solidly right through and finished in a meritorious 6th place, a noble effort indeed and, as with the Ladies, showed promise of good times ahead. Ben set the ball rolling with 22.52 on leg 1 in 10th spot followed by in leg order :- marvellous Mike Deegan 12.13, 7th place, back after injury Gerry 23.56, 9th , dependable Darren 12.35 , 8th , Paul ( Mr versatile ) Savage 23.49, 9th, impressive newcomer Daniel McGrath 12.07, 7th, Phil ( sick note ) Leybourne 24.12, 8th, defying the medics to yet again prove he'd run through a brick wall for the club, Huddo 12.25, 8th, a fine run and as usual supported vociferously around the course by animated siblings Groucho , Harpo , Chico , Zeppo and Gummo. Next up came reliable Rob with 24.07 maintaining 8th place handing on to Simon who retained our status quo with 12.36. On the penultimate leg Joe ran a blinder to take us up into 6th with a speedy 22.30, setting up rocket Lockett to apply the coup de grace with his excellent 12.10. The B team ran consistently throughout finishing 2nd B and 32nd overall whilst Nicola Hall gained valuable experience running as our sole ladies B teamer. Wakefield took the spoils in the Ladies race with Morpeth popular winners of the Mens over previously untouchable Leeds. But as we all know the first one now will later be last and the loser now will be later to win cos the times they are a changin. He knows his stuff that Dylan guy. Weekend XC Round Up.
The English National Cross Country Championships took place over the weekend at Alton Towers. Having been held at The Towers back in 2008 runners were well prepared for the hill that was to be greeted on each lap. But, due to difficult conditions caused by the recent weather race organisers had to alter the course during the event in order to ensure the events could go ahead safely. Well done to the organisers on ensuring the event took place. Thanks.
Representing Salford and first home was Jan Pichl in 208th. Rob Hughes was the second Salford athlete home in 251st place. Well done to everyone who ran this weekend at the National. Full results can be found here.
This weekend was also the Northern vets Cross Country Championships which were held at Warrington. In the 10k race Paul Simons was the winner followed in 4th place by Stan Owen. In the 5k race Bev Jenkins won the race. Also running were Sid Sacks (4th), Denise Wakefield (9th) and Arthur Walsham (17th). Full results can be found here.

Pennine Bridleway Relay
Sunday 30th January was a superb day out on the fells for Salford Harriers with the Mens team winning the relay by a short distance from Calder Valley Fell runners. A few changes in the team this year from the team that finished second in 2010. Westy and Huddo made a great start to the day on leg one handing over to Jones and Brown. Brown constantly moaning about being unfit showed he had no problems with running down hill, just up hill. Borrowdale went sight seeing on leg 2 and throw away a good lead, but maybe they wouldn't have held on to the lead in the later legs anyway. Leg three saw Hughes and Bruton head out and they had a solid run on the leg with the most climb. Handing over to Jan and Mark Russell on leg four these two blasted round to run a new leg record. Well done lads, especially considering Jan also ran his heart out on Saturday afternoon at the Northern Cross Country Championships. Heading off on leg five Riddell and Bailey had a much faster run than last year running four minutes quicker to return home in the lead some 38 seconds ahead of Calder Valley Fellrunners.
Great support as usual from the clubs loyal supporters.
Mutiny on the County
Our lads and lassies certainly brought in the new year in scintillating fashion last weekend and what a fantastic turnout, it was just a pity most of the other Clubs didn’t support the event in the same way - a sign of the times unfortunately. Where the better runners from Sale, Trafford, Altrincham and Horwich, our biggest rivals in the area. I suppose one can quote the old adage of ’you can only beat what is put in front of you' and that certainly rang true here. Many years ago we used to look forward with desire and relish towards the County Championship. As a prelude to the Northerns and Nationals it acted as the perfect build up - quality races, large vibrant fields, expertly organised and suitably highly respected by one and all. Not so these days - remember the old Lancashire Championships, just ask Harriers icon Stan Curran about these events, where you had to be of virtual International quality just to make the top dozen or so. Then they changed the county boundaries and we became Greater, if by name, certainly not in stature. Yet although significantly weakened, the new county event still provided good quality races in their formulative years, bringing the Harriers many exciting and celebrated glory days. How the times have changed, for whatever reason the event started to sink like the Titanic to the level it is today, if not entirely meaningless, yet a mere parody of its former self. This is a great shame, the winter calendar is so bereft of true championship events it’s little wonder we, like many other clubs have taken 'to the hills' in search of better competition. Whilst the new look Manchester Area League has proven to be a huge success, we still need a thriving County Championship as a springboard for the greater challenges ahead. Pete Budd
Northern Cross Country Championship Performances
Roy Profit, the clubs historian, has compiled this comprehensive list of performances in the Northern Cross Country Championships. Looking at how our athletes performed recently in the Greater Manchester and Lancashire County Cross Country championships, there is scope for athletes to win more medals at the Northern Cross Country at Sunderland on Saturday 29th January. Click on this link to open the document in PDF format.
Many thanks to Roy for the time he's taken in producing this document.

Auld Lang Syne Fell Race
Just in case Fell Running wasn't hard enough in normal running gear, one member of our club decided that she would wear her summer best outfit and head for the moors of Howarth. Picture here! More photos of the race viewable on David Bretts Website
In the race of nutters on New Years Eve were a World Triathlon Champion, Elvis, The Mad Hatter to name but just a few along with the other runners in more suited running gear for the tough 6.6 mile fell race we know as the Auld Lang Syne.
Full results of the race will be on www.woodentops.org.uk very shortly.
Representing Salford Harriers were Andi Jones, Mark Russell and Julie Laverock. You can decide which one of us ran in fancy dress!!!!

M/c Area XC League - 4th December 2010
Well done to all 18 of our hardy souls for braving the elements on Saturday as the men produced a fine team performance to win their event by a single point. At the front Andi fought a thrilling duel with Tom Lancashire, the latter finally breaking clear on the final lap. With fine support by Joe(5th), Ben(8th), Jan(14th), Mark (23rd) and sixth counter Simon(24th). Not too far behind and also running well came Phil W(29th), Stan O (45th), Jacko (56th), Tom H(75th), Sean(77th), Gavin(101st), Ronnie(145th), Tom T(181st), Vinny(201 st) and Dennis(206th). In the Ladies race Anna had her best ever cross country outing, chasing hard all the way behind the classy Donna Jones, Anna has come on in leaps and bounds this year and is now looking a really mature, well rounded athlete. Another solid run by Nicola in 39th completed the Ladies line up. Congratulations and thanks to each and every one of the small yet dedicated band of marshalls and course setter uppers, without whose help there would have been no meeting, it would have been so easy on the third Saturday before Christmas to go shopping or stay at home in the warmth watching ski jumping from Garmisch or whatever so top marks all around, not forgetting all the officials especially Julie, doing their usual sterling work. Pete.
Gravy Pud - Revised
On a cold snowy day, 60 hardy souls did battle on the revised running of the Gravy Pud which for one day only was known as the Gravy Round the Resers Pud Race. The race measured at 5.59 miles was a great success. Ice on route made sections challenging but most seemed to miss having to struggle up Lees Hill on the normal course. The mens winner was Sale Harriers Gareth Raven who recently spent 4 weeks in Kenya on the edge of the Rift Valley altitude training with UKA. First lady was Donna Jones also from Sale Harriers who also won the Manchester League Cross Country the day before. Many thanks to all who turned up to race and to help with the race or just to donate to Jades Wheels which was this years charity chosen for the race proceeds. Thank you Andi Jones
Gravy Pud
The Gravy Pud race route is badly covered with snow so we have taken the decission to hold a race on the Round the Resers race course. Same venue for race HQ, same time for race start (11am). Please come and support this race as proceeds from the race are being donated to Jades Wheel. Jades Wheels is raising money for a sports wheelchair for Jade who is a promising athlete but was born with Spina Bifida.
Hopefully see many people on Sunday 5th December in Tintwistle.
Sherdley Park Cross Country
Deep in the heart of Rugby League land, a brave Salford contingent 'tackled' the testing Sherdley Park course today. Although a little on the 'short side', the team certainly did'nt 'stand off' and with a bit more 'ruck' could have fared even better. The mens team comprising Mark Russell, Jan Pichl,Stan Owen, Paul Birkett, Mark Seed, Ian Jackson and Tom Hall 'put in' a fine performance often overtaking 'on the blindside' to move 'up and under' the skin of their opponents . After the ignominious 'drop out' from last season when we 'propped' up the rest, its vital we take 'advantage' of our next home fixture at the Boggart, after which we'll be 'threequarters' of the way there . So we must 'knock on' and 'try' our best to avoid being in the 'second row' of teams next year. P.S. Before 'handing off' , special mention to Jacko - up at the crack of dawn to work the early shift . As sixth counter here, his dedication could prove vital in our 'conversion' to Div 1. Well done everyone, they gave it their all and were totally 'haka'red at the finish. Pete.
Salford Harriers representing England
A number of Salford Harriers athletes were out representing England at the weekend at the International Cross Country Championships in Dublin. Mike Deegan was third in the V50 race finishing 10 seconds behind the winner. Mike helped the England team win gold medals. Stan Owen was representing England in the V55 age group and finished 5th overall.
Bev Jenkins, who was reserve for the England team, won the open race. Husband paul was reserve for the England team but didn't race.

A good day out in the park!
At the first Manchester league Cross Country Salford Harriers were out in force wearing the red vest of the Harriers. In the mens race the Norman brothers of Andy and Dave from Altrincham were first and second followed by fast improving son of Paul Roden who ran world cross for GB, Jamie Roden of Sale Harriers. First Salford Harrier home today was new boy Mark Russell. Mark running his fiorst race for the club since joining from Bolton Tri was 15th overall and second V40. Mark was closely followed by Paul Savage and Simon Bruton. Speaking after the race Brtuon was pleased with his run considering he had been suffering with a sore leg since the early part of the week. Following Bruton home was the rocket Lockett and Pichl. Full results of the mens race are here.
In the ladies race Olivia Walwyn of Altrincham was first home. Salfords Anna Weaver was first salford lady home finishing in 6th position. Nicola Hall finished in 39th. Full results here.

Relays Facts
Club historian Roy Profit was asked the question, 'When was the last time Salford finished ahead of both Sales men and womens team in the northern road relays and when was the last time Bev Jenkins wasn't on a medaling ladies team?'
And this is his answer, as usualy Roy took no time at all in finding the answer.
We only have to go back one year to the 6 and 4 stage relays of 2009 to find examples of Salford Harriers finishing ahead of Sale in both men's and women's
events.
Northern Relays at Leeds Carnegie:
Men: Salford - 2nd, Sale - 9th.
Women: Salford - 7th, Sale - 9th.
National Relays at Sutton Park:
Men: Salford - 19th, Sale - 34th.
Women:: Salford - 33rd, Sale - DNF (only 2 runners).
The Bev question is harder to answer and probably requires quite a lot of research. Certainly, from my memory she always seems to have been there
when we have done well at Northern and National level, whether on the road or country. Perhaps Bev can tell us if she can recall any occasion
where she was unavailable when the club had a great success.
Comparing the records of Salford and Sale in the Northern 6-stage, an interesting and rather surprising fact about Sale emerges. As you know, Salford
has a fine record in the race. The event started in 1969 and has been held annually ever since, making last week's race the 42nd in the series.
We have won medals in 15 of these, made up of 9 x 1st, 4 x 2nd, 2 x 1st. Leading individual medal winners in our club are Neil Wilkinson - 8, Ken
Chapman - 7, Larry Mathews, Martin Cox and Andi Jones - 5 each.
Sale Harriers? Despite having many fine runners over the years, they have never won a medal in this race.
So Roy then goes on to report on the 12 stage where Sales high standard is shown off better!
Perhaps you are a little harsh in writing off Sale's interest in road relays. Their record in the 6-stage is pretty dismal but a study of their
results in the 12-stage shows a different picture.
The Northern 12-stage started in 1968 and has now been held on 43 occasions. 2 clubs top the table of total medals won with 19 medals each.
They are Salford Harriers and.....Sale Harriers! Their spread of medals is very different. Salford's total is made up of 8 x 1st, 8 x 2nd, 3 x 3rd.
Sale have won 1 x 1st, 8 x 2nd, 10 x 3rd.
On an individual level, Salford's top medal winners in this race are Duncan Mason and Gary Crowther with 10 medals, Jimmy Newnes 9 and Ken
Chapman, Larry Mathews, Kevin McGee and Mike Higginbottom with 8 each.
Many thanks to Roy Profit for providing us with the above facts whch make for interesting reading.
Jones in Doha
Thought I would share this video with you if I can get it to work. I have been making videos this week for my schools VLE as the kids are interested in what I am up to. So here is a little video I made today while wasting time at a Costa Coffe Shop.

Northern Road Relays- 6 stage & 4 stage relays
Report by Pete Budd on the Northern 6 Stage and 4 Stage Relays 2010
It was ladies day at the races last saturday, forget Ascot though, this was wythenshawe park on a cool autumn afternoon as Salfords flying fillies fairly covered themselves in glory with brilliant bronze medals. Tess Walker got the show on the road with a superb opening leg in 17.21 ( 7th best overall ), the ever maturing Anna Weaver kept the pot boiling with a handy 18.42, followed by Sam Briggs moving us up to 4th with a crisp 18.34. It was left to Julie Cook running a well controlled 19.13 to stay ahead of the fast finishing Leigh athlete to complete a great effort by the girls. It was particularly good to see Julie run anchor ,one can only admire and applaud a girl so utterly dogged by injury still produce quality performancies on hardly any decent training. The mens sextet came within a whisker of emulating the girls, finishing 4th in their race. The guys were always in the thick of things in what was a thrilling race from start to finish . Joe Bailey 17.01 (5th) , new recruit Aron Adem 17.34(10th) Ben Riddell 17.08(6th) Andi Jones 17.09(5th) Carl Hardman 17.27 (3rd) and finally John Brown 17.40 last leg just missing bronze despite ,as always giving it 100 % plus effort . As we all know John is one of the best around on mountains and fells and to run that quick on the flat was quite a performance. Praise worthy efforts on the day by the ladies B team, Mens B team (excellent 24th and National qualification) , also C and D teams, not forgetting an under 15s Boys trio. Very well done to one and all. Finally a couple of posers for you stats people, (a) when was the last time we beat Sale in both mens and Ladies races at this level (b) When ( if indeed ever) have we won team medals at this level without the brilliant Bev in the team ?
Coxy Update
Salford Harriers Martin Cox has been travelling around again taking part in races in various european countries. Hopefully Martin will be running for the A team at the forth coming National Road Relays. Recently Martin took part in the Morat-Fribourg, finishing in 10th place in a time of 56.53. This was Martins highest position in this race but not his fastest time which he recorded back in 2007 as 56.10. Two weeks ago Martin raced a 22km mountain race in San Genesio, Italy. In the race he finished 2nd behind Gerd Frick, a member of the Italian team at this years World Mountain Running Championships.

Weekend Round Up 4th October 2010
The Salford Harriers were busy again over the weekend with athletes representing the club at the Northern Road Relays. The relay which were this year hosted by Sale Harriers Manchester at Wythenshawe Park seemed to go well even though the course was tight at times.
The winning team in the men’s race was Derby. Jonny Gilby, who for a long time trained with the Salford boys on Tuesdays and Saturday’s ran a very impressive second leg for his team. Salford men finished fourth on the day but were looking to medal at the event. Strong runs by Joe and Ben were very encouraging. Andi, maybe suffering the effects of big mileage and a little cold and Carl Hardman on his way back from injury could have done with finding a few more seconds which would have given the ever consistent John Brown a little more of a margin as he set off on the final leg. New member Aron Amed, running his first race since coming to the UK had a strong run and I am sure there is more to come. The men finished fourth and now look forward to the National Road Relays on Saturday 16th October at Sutton Park, Birmingham.
Full results of the mens relays can be found here.
The womens team had a very good day and ended up third and bronze medal winners. Women’s team manager Tess Walker lead the girls out on leg 1 to run the seventh fastest time of the day. Strongly supported by Anna Weaver, Sam Briggs and Julie Cook the girls finished third overall.
Full results of the relays can be found here.
In the lower age groups and thanks to Vinnie, the club managed to field an under 15 team for the first time for a few years now which is very encouraging.
Another great Salford Harriers marathon performance on Sunday was by Jan Pichl who won the Jersey Marathon in 2:31:30, finishing 72 seconds ahead of 2nd and nearly 15 minutes in front of third. At the other end of the UK Tomas Abyu had a run round the Lochness Marathon. Tomas won the race in 2.20 finishing five minutes ahead of the next runner.
John Brown was back in action on Sunday winning the Sandstone Trail Race.
Weekend Round Up
This weekend has been a busy weekend for Salford Harriers athletes with several athletes having runs out at various races.
Today (Sunday) saw the first running of the Swinton 10 mile race which replaces the Swinton Half Marathon. First Salford Harriers home in 57.00 was Tom Martin in third place overall. dave Lockett, using the run as a tempo ran 59.20 to finish in 7th place. In 9th place was Dave Hudson who ran 59.42. First vet 60 in the race was Salfords Stan Curran who returned home in 68.01. Full results can be found here.
Further a field Joe Bailey, Ben Riddell and Tess Walker were representing the North of England at the Swansea Bay 10k. Known for fast times if the weather is kind the three Salford athletes would have been looking to better their PBs. Gun times for the three were Joe Bailey, 14th in 31.31, Ben Riddell 17th in 32.02 and Tess Walker 36.00. Full provisional results can be found here.
Paul Simons running at Northern Vets Track Championships finished first in 16.38. Bev Jenkins was 1st lady in the Lancaster Road 5K in a time of 18.00.
It is looking good for the team for the North of England road relays which are being staged at Sale Harriers, Wythensahwe Park on Saturday 2nd October. Teams are being finalised in the next few days. Please let Andi Jones know if you haven't already confirmed you are or are not available.
Northern Road Relays & Calderdale Way Relays
Please let Andi Jones know asap if you are available for the Northern Road Relays on Saturday 2nd October. The club have entered several teams for the mens event which is being staged at Wythenshawe Park, Manchester. It has been suggested that the North West Road Relays now replace the trial race of the Park Run which was first suggested. Obviously, any known form will be taken in to consideration when the team selections are being made.
Two teams have been entered for the Calderdale Way Relay. We await confirmation from Halifax Harriers that both our entries are accepted. The relay is on Sunday 12th December. Please let Andi Jones know if you are available on this date so we can field a strong team with a view of retaining the title we have won for the past two years.

In the ladies race Radcliffes Anna Lupton finished 31st and 2nd British lady.
Well done to John on his impressive record at this championships.
Summer Handicap - 19th August 2010
Thursday 19th August saw 21 runners, including 6 new faces, turn out for the annual Club Summer Handicap on the tough two lap course in Boggart Hole Clough. Lone lady in the event, Bev Jenkins, continues her return to form with a close third whilst the actual fastest time of the day was Carl Hardman's 16.08 just ahead of Ben Riddell. Debra Riding ran well to finish in 45m11 and may have been one of the top vets but the results don’t distinguish between senior women and vets! Next was new girl Caroline Broderick in 47m57. Well done to all the runners who took part.
A full set of results can be found here.
Brown on Top of the World!
John Brown as been a great club runner for many years and has many team titles and individual titles to his name. But he has now achieved his aim of being selected for the 10th time for the Great Britain and NI Mountain Running team for the forthcoming World Mounatin Running Championships in Slovenia. John was second in the trial race which was held on Snowdon last weekend. John said 'I've achieved a persoanl goal of representing my country at 10 world championships. It gets harder to train when you get older but I managed to combine a lot of cycling and just enough running to get me in shape'. Salford Harriers wish John every success at the forth coming World Championships, but before this event on 5th September John is running for his country again at the Pikes Peak race in USA. John has a busy month ahead and we are sure he will do himself and Salford Harriers proud. Link for the World Mountain running Championships here. Link for the Pikes Peak here.

Weekend Round Up
The athletes were at it again, running races across the UK and Europe with some excellent performances and PBs.
On Saturday evening at Trafford AC there were a number for 5000m races set up to allow athletes to aim for fast times. Joe Bailey ran a solid race and finished 8th in 14.46, just missing out on his PB set earlier in the year. Ben Riddell had an excellent run and broke the 15 minute barrier and in doing so winning the C race. Ben ran 14.57. Also making a return to track racing was super Vet 45 Paul Simons. In his first track race for some seven years Paul put in a strong showing and finished in 16.20. Tess Walker ran a solid race and finished in 17.31.

Also running was Duncan Mason who has just spent some time out in France at altitude with Team GB working as phsio to the marathon team and Mo Farah and Chris Thompson. Well done to everyone who is out therre competing in the Red vest of Salford Harriers.
North West Road Relays ***Change of information***
This years North West Road Relays are planned to be staged at Leigh Sports Village on Saturday 18th September. Landing two weeks before the Northern Road Relays this could be used as a great test prior to the Northerns where the club will be looking at winning medals and fielding at least three teams. Sean Cordell is going to be collating a list of interested runners as Andi Jones will be away at the Great North Run on the day of the race. Please contact Sean asap if you are available to run in these relays.
Summer Handicap Race
This year's summer handicap race takes place on Thursday 19th August at Boggart Hole Clough. Meet 7.00pm at the Bluebell as usual. For those who haven't done it before (and for those who have) it's a testing up-and-down 5k course over two laps, and a great event for all members at whatever standard. It's an 'open handicap'- meaning that runners set off at intervals according to their expected finishing time: (i.e. slower earlier, and faster later), giving everyone a fighting chance of crossing the line first!
There's prizes for everyone (we all bring a prize and take a prize: nothing extravagant, a bottle or a few cans seem to be perennial favourites!) at the presentation which is back at the pub, where there will also be a buffet.
It's fine just to turn up on the night, but giving your name to Bob in advance will help us with the handicapping.
Bob Towell was saying that it would be good to get all the newer members down to this social event as well as the old hacks, so if we could all spread the word to any who might not yet be on the e-mail forum, that would be good.

Club Sizzler
Well done to all the Salford Harriers who ran at the Club Race Sale Sizzler on Thursday 29th July. The race was delayed by 15 minutes due to the park barriers being locked and the officials told the leading athletes they ‘might’ have to jump the barrier. There were some strong performances especially by Ben Riddell (2nd) and Sid Sacks (1st V70).
The race was won by Matt Barnes of Altrincham in 14m42. He was followed by Ben Riddell running a fantastic PB of 15m05. Anna Weaver recently broke the ladies course record in the Heaton Park 5k Park Run when she ran 18m18s on 15th May taking the course record away from another Salford Harrier, Sam Briggs. She also is in good form on the track at the moment finishing 2nd lady in 9m58s at the Trafford Open Meeting 3k on Tuesday evening. Anna has been improving rapidly over the last 6 months which is looking good for the ladies relay team at the end of the summer. The next important race for the ladies team is Horwich 5k road race on Sunday 20th June.
Another race, another PB for Bailey
The first BMC event of the season saw a host of talented athletes racing at Sports City, Manchester.

Coxy wins inter-counties fell champs
Martin Cox won the inter-counties fell champs by over a minutes from Simon Bailey, Mercia. Martin lead this top class field of runners around the Lletty Fell Race, North Wales. Martin is in great form at the moment and has now moved to Bolder , USA to train for a few months. The American mountain runners should be getting worried!
Bailey and a huge PB
Many athletes represented the club at the Great Manchester 10k on Sunday 16th May but Joe Bailey took the race on and smashed his PB. He lowered his best for the 10k distance from 31 minutes to 30.13. This is a great achievement and shows the work he's been putting in to his training. We all look forward to seeing him break the 30 minute mark this summer.
Other runners choose a different racing kit today and this included our very own Paul 'Santa' Simons. Paul had a very good run dressed in a full Santa out fit.
First vet 70 was Sid Sacks.
Congratulations to all who ran today and showed Greater Manchester how Great Salford Harriers are.

GEOFF DOGGETT MEMORIAL 5K
The 3rd road race in the club championship brought 16 of Salfords finest runners to Littleborough for the Geoff Dogget memorial 5K. A great turnout for a true legend.
The race started bang on time at 7.15 and was taken out by the in form Dave The Rocket Lockett, closely followed by club mates James Williams, Andy Kay, Dave Hudson and Oldhams Mike Mannings. The lead pack stayed together until approx a mile in when the Rocket put the hammer down and made an early break for glory on the slight downhill section before the dreaded climb. Unfortunately the Level crossing was being occupied by a fully loaded train when the first runners got to it, so the steps at the side had to be negoitiated putting paid to a fast time for all runners.
The Rocket crossed the line in first place in a great time of 16.14 (level crossing considered!) with James Williams 2nd (16.36) Andy Kay 4th (16.45) Dave Hudson 6th (17.05) and Mr Consistent Ian Jackson 7th (17.44) followed by a mass of other runners in the famous Red and White Salford colours, Sean Cordell, Charlie Foster, Ron Warrender, Callum Jones, Paul The Para, Tommy D first V60, Steve Jones, Vinny first V65, Row, Debra Ridding and Sid first V70.
A great race for a great guy!

LONDON MARATHON - CONGRATULATIONS TO ANDI JONES
Salford had 10 runners out last weekend in the London Marathon. Andi Jones 10th and first Brit in 2009 committed himself to his target time early in the race and finished 2010 2nd Brit in a time of 2:16:38 and achieved his goal with selection for both the European Marathon Cup in Barcelona and the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Our congratulations to Andi and we wish him continued success.
Salford's second man home was Pumlani Bangani continuing his return from injury finishing 109th in 2:36:57.
We then had three runners in the O/45 vets race. Paul Simons 24th in 2:45:55, Keith Boardman 39th 2:49:39 and Steve Wrigley 63rd 2:53:50.
Iron Man Steve Jones was our next man home in what Steve says will be only one of five Marathons he intends running this year, his time of 3:35:26 probably reflects the fact Steve cycled to the start and saved a little for the swim home.
Gary Thomason 45 years a Salford Harrier and still grinding out the miles finished 489th O/50 in 3:47:55 to improve on his time last year by 20 minutes.
Father and son duo Frank and Steve Murray brought up the rear finishing together. Steve in 4:44:56 for his first Marathon and only his second race vowing to run the remaining races in the Club Championships and return to London next year. Frank finished 318th O/60 just one second behind Steve in 4:44:57.
Well done to all the Salford runners.

Club Awards 2009 Season
Saturday 6th February was our annual club presentation night, and was a huge success thanks to the hard work of everyone involved especially Ruth who did an oustanding job. Please find below report for another hugely succesfull season for club.
Annual Presentation Evening, 6th February 2010
According to our illustrious President this is the first time in 46 years of attending the presentation that we have had a live band to entertain us. The evening got of to a noisy start with organised games for the youngsters; these were followed by the presentation with the traditional raffle, live music, hot and cold buffet and then dancing through to midnight.
Presentations were made by the two Roy’s (Profitt & Standring) with Hilary directing operations.
Our male athlete of the Year was for the second successive year Andi Jones who continued his great form with a silver medal at the Northern Cross Country leading the men to the team silver. Andi had a fantastic run in the London Marathon winning the AAA individual title with a PB of 2.15.40 and was within the qualifying time required to run at the World Championships in Berlin. Andi also led the team of Tomas Abyu and James Kovacs home to win the AAA’s silver medal.
Female athlete of the year was Tess Walker who won the award not only for her outstanding achievements throughout 2009 - 1st Greater Manchester, 9th Northern’s, 23rd Nationals, 4th fastest female at the Northern Road Relays she has like Andi for the men done sterling work as Team Captain of the ladies.
Male vet was Vinnie Murphy for his persistence throughout the Road and XC seasons.
Julie Cook was Lady Vet easing her way back into form after her injury lay off.

The final award went to Arthur Walsham in recognition of 60 years Club Membership and still running internationally today close on 80 with a record
which defies belief. Running 100/200yard in his early years progressing through to International Marathon Running (52 in total)

'Tess ends up in stitches'
Salford Harriers successfully fielded two teams in the Pennine Bridleway Relay for the first time. The mens A team were successfully second place to a strong team from Horwich. Starting the day off strong was Dave Lockett and Phil West who returned in 6th place. Andi Jones and John Brown set off hard on the second leg and managed to pull back all the teams except Horwich, but did manage to get the team within sight of Horwich asnd ran the quickest leg of the day on leg 2. Leg three was also ran the quickest on the day by James Kovacs and Rob Hughes. The two took the team in to the lead by the hand over to leg four. Dave Townsend and Jan Pichl had a good leg and were soon handing over to the two youngsters Ben Riddell and Joe Bailey but had lost a place and a few seconds to Horwich. After an icy start and a few falls they managed to return the team in second place which considering it was the clubs first outting in this event is very pleasing. Joe and Ben also ran the fastest leg of the day on leg 5.
The club fielded a mixed team who placed 44th out of 87 teams finishing. Unfortuately Tess 'The Fell Runner' Walker fell and spent the evening at hospital having stitches.

Next year the win is ours!
Salford bring home the Silver
Salford's mens team were out in force at a foggy Northern Cross Country Championships staged at Witton Park, Blackburn. Salford's mens team were looking to make an inpact upon the event and managed to get a good number of runners out. In the early stages of the race Salford's Andi Jones and Stockports Steve Vernon were leading the race. As the race progressed Vernon pushed on and gradually opened up a commanding gap over Jones and Bolton's Tom Lanchashire back in third place battling with Blackburn's Ben Fish. Vernon came home to win the Northern Cross Country title for a third time and becoming only the third man to retain the title in the history of the event. Andi Jones was clear in second and Tom Lancashire finished third. Finishing strongly in fourth place was Leigh's Pete Riely closely follwed by Ben Fish. Next Salford counter was 10th place Carl Hardman having an amazing run. Backing the team up and third counter was John Brown, 47th, who recently was first Vet 40 at the Helsby Half Marathon. Ben Riddell in his first Northern Cross finished 50th position, James Kovacs 57th and Joe Bailey 63rd.
The team prize was won in great style by Leeds City, with Salford 2nd and Altrincham 3rd.
The National Cross Country Championships is on Saturday 27th February at Roundhey Park, Leeds.

Northern Cross-Country Championships - Women's Race
Northern Cross-Country Championships, Witton Park, Blackburn. Saturday 24th January.
A solid performance by the women's team brought the Salford Ladies team home in 10th position today (beating the next team Stockport Harriers by 95 points). The team was led home by Sam Briggs in her debut run at the Northerns in a fantastic 18th place, Estelle Malm also had a really strong first race of the season finishing in 28th position. The team was completed by Anneka Sanders (124th) and Anna Weaver (143rd). Lizzy Adams also had a good run in her first ever cross-country championships finishing 203rd (this is a mistake in the results as she was down as Jane Bilton!). Well done to the girls on a very very tough course today. We are now looking forward to the Nationals in Leeds.
Northern Cross Country Championships Saturday 23rd Jan.
Details of the Northern Cross Country Championships can be found here.
The team is very strong for this event and with the positive team spirit we have we should be looking at bringing back medals. The course is slightly different to that used a few years ago when Andi Jones won his first Northern XC title, but still contains the big hills.
Sam has a great start to 2010
New club runner Sam Briggs had a fantastic run on Sunday 3rd January in the Manchester Cross-Country League at Woodbank Park, Stockport. Sam took the lead in the race half way round and was just beaten on the last climb before the finish. Finishing in second position is Sam's strongest performance so far this season having finished 5th at Sherdley Park in November and 6th at The Clough in December. The girls team are now looking forward to the Greater Manchester Cross-Country Championships next weekend. Full results of the Manchester League race will be available shortly at www.race-results.co.uk.
