NoEAA 12 Stage Road Relays Sunderland 1st April 2007
In what were blustery conditions at times, Salford Harriers headed to the North East for all the fun of the twelve stage relays. With four long and eight short legs to be tackled, there was plenty to be getting excited about.
Tarus kicked off the day with a very strong leg to return the team in 9th place and to set the team up nicely for challenging for medals. Handing over to Carl, who has been suffering recently with illness but made the team stronger, went on to push the team up the pecking order and returned in 5th place. Paul, who has done a great job in selecting the team and finalising arrangements, ran a committed run and returned the team in 7th place. Taking over on the 4th and 2nd long leg Andi Jones pulled back local north east athlete Martin Sciafe, Morpeth and was hunting down an in-form Matt Barnes, Alty AC. Jones returned in 4th place, and 4th fastest leg of the day, and handed over to Pumlani who extended us up the running order with a great run to return in 3rd place. Approaching the half way stage in the race and the strong travelling support were thinking that maybe we were strong enough to medal even though we were missing a few runners who will hopefully be back in action for the National in two weeks. Kovacs held on to third place and handed over to the recent winner of the Wilmslow Half marathon, Tomas Abyu. Tomas, not feeling 100%, ran a solid run and moved the team up to 2nd place which was to be our highest placing of the day.
Billy Martin and Rob Hughes ran solid short stage legs ensuring the team stayed in contention in bronze medal position. Eddie Simpson headed out on the final long stage leg, but has missed many weeks with injury but still put in all his effort to return the team in 5th placing. The final two legs were ran by Phil West who maintained 5th place and Phil Leybourne, member of the winning vets team last weekend, bringing back the strong Salford Harriers A team in 5th place.
On the whole a very good turn out by both runners and travelling support. Well done to all and see you in Birmingham in two weeks.
Reebok Festive Five Wythenshawe Park 31st December 2006
As the year drew to an end with windy conditions, Salford Harriers were busy racing at the Reebok Festive Five. Tomas Abyu, who has recently returned home from training in his home country of Ethiopia, won the race in 23.43, followed very closely by Liverpool's Jonny Mellor in 23.46.
Salford's Carl Hardman was forth placed finisher in 24.25. Tarus Elly finished 13th in 25.49 and James Kovacs finished a strong 25th in 26.54. Finishing in 46.20 and 311th position was Salford's Arthur Welsham.
In the ladies race Salford had one lady running. Jane Bilton finished 156th overall in the race and 21st lady in a time of 35.43.
Well done to all those who have raced this year. Hope you all managed to set new pbs and more importantly that you have all set some tough times to beat in 2007! Happy New Year!
Ribble Valley 10K Clitheroe 31st December 2006
In blustry conditions runners struggled but good performances were seen. Stuart Stokes of Sale Harriers won the race in 30.13, followed closley by Ben Fish, of organising club Blackburn, in 30.18, in what was a close race until Stokes broke Fish in the final half mile of the race.
Another Manchester based athlete, Matt Barnes, Alty AC, was a strong third place runner in 30.22. Fourth place went to Steve Hepples of Newham and Essex Beagles in 30.29. Fifth place was Salford Harrier's Andi Jones in 30.38.
The womens race was won by Helen Clithore in 32.32 which saw her narrowly miss breaking the course record she set last year.
11th Village Bakery Half Marathon Wrexham, Wales 19th February 2006 James Williams
A good representation from Salford Harriers turned out for the Village Bakery Half Marathon on a very chilly February morning. The course was flat throughout and as such permitted an excellent opportunity for fast times.
The route took us through quiet country lanes, save for the odd murderous farmer and his kamikaze landrover who seemed intent on ridding the countryside of us invading townies.
Eddie Simpson finished a good five minutes ahead of the field in an excellent 67:35, with James Kovacs (5th) and Ian Jackson (13th) finishing in 73:54 and 76:48 respectively. A strong run from Sean McMyler (77:28) and a PB for Billy Martin (77:44) saw Salford finish with 5 runners in the top twenty. Maria Lowe was the fifth placed lady after also running a PB in 87:58. I would recommend this fast, flat course to anyone hoping to run a good time, just watch out for the wing mirrors!
