NoEAA X-Country Championships Heaton Park Saturday 27th January 2007 Pete Budd
The inspirational Andi Jones romped to a second successive Northern Crown at Heaton Park, defending his title wonderfully well. Leading right from the start Andi held off a late surge from old rival Gareth Raven of Sale and now joins a small and prestigious group of athletes who have managed to successfully defend the Northern title. Not bad for a Northern boy who just loves his gravy!!
Phil Leybourne as usual gave his everything to the team cause despite ongoing problems with his knee and finished 33rd and 2nd counter. Believe me if this guy had kept injury free over the years he could have been top notch. Next came Matt Moorhouse in 47th, a good run considering his lack of proper training. Nice to see Dave Milliken back on the country again and running well for 59th. Dave has been strutting his stuff on the fells recently with some degree of success. Just a few steps behind came Pumlani Bangani in 62nd. Since joining Salford as predominantly a road race specialist, Pumlani has proven to be a very good team man indeed and turns out on any terrain. Making up the scoring six was James Jackson in 77th, this was James’s best run for a while and augurs well for a good return on the roads.
Phil West, as usual, gave his wholehearted effort in 90th place ahead of Rob Hughes in 110th who ran ok in spite of a recent spate of injuries. Next came a rejuvenated Paul Birkett in 166th place. Paul has hardly trained recently so this was a remarkable effort. Billy Martin wasn’t at his best in 202nd, but knowing Billy he’ll be determined to come back stronger and better. Sean McMyler, back in the fold after a short absence, was reasonably pleased with his 242nd place ahead of Mike Wakefield who ran solidly for 286th. Dave Shaw showed signs of an improvement in 380th whilst Tommy Daniels 547th and Roe Bowness 583rd once again donned the red and white vest with pride.
Overall the men finished third team and bronze medallists (279points) behind the all conquering Leeds City (80) and Sale (149).
Andi Jones
What was always going to be a tough race, ended up being even tougher, especially that third and final lap. The first lap seemed to fly by, running comfortably with Webb from Leeds, and early on in the lap with Salford's Carl Hardman. Second lap and Webb died, I was left on my own. It's always funny how you run passed a group of spectators and you have 60m on the next runner and yet three seconds down the course you have 20m on the next runner!!!!!!
The third lap took its toll on me and Gareth Raven, (Sale Harriers) who has medalled in this event on numerous occasions, (but still has not taken gold and was very much after it yesterday) started to make inroads into my lead.
I was aware of him early on in the third lap and by the last mile I could not miss the fact that he was right back up with me, challenging hard. The noise around the race course kept me going. I had Bob screaming at me that I would have to run hard if I was to hold him off. I had Donna shouting at me not to let him win, even though Gareth and Donna run for the same club. My mum and dad (who was only there because Man City play Sunday and not Saturday this week) were screaming at me, and then there was everyone else screaming and cheering. And to top it all off, there were just as many, if not more, screaming exactly the same at Raven!!!!
Now I am known for not having a sprint finish, which was bit of a problem yesterday. Raven was hunting me down and he knows better than most I don't have the speed to pick it up in the last few hundred metres of a race. But somehow yesterday I managed to hold him off.
As I crossed the line and chucked up, it began to sink in that I had managed to win the Northern Cross Championships twice on the run. Raven looked a little peed off, but I don't blame him one little bit. In third place was a very excited Matt Barnes of Alty AC who really worked hard and wanted to medal this year.
Well done to all those who ran, especially to the scoring six who helped gain the team bronze medal.
Great Edinburgh Cross Country (9.2K) Saturday 13th Janury 2007 Andi Jones
In what could possibly be the best XC field assembled this year, Bekele, Tadesse and Kipchoge lined up against Salford's Tomas Abyu and myself for what was always going to be a tight race. (Ok, it might not have been tight, but it was always going to be fast!!!!!) After the first K, I had forgotten that Bekele headed the field and battled hard with the felow Brits in the race.
The race was won in superb fashion by Kenenisa Bekele (Etiopia) who dropped Zersenay Tadesse (Eritrea) and Eliud Kipchoge (Kenya) in an awesome finish.
On what was a very runnable cross country course, with sections of mud and some small climbs, but made very tough by the exteremely strong winds which battered Scotland this weekend, runners found it hard and challenging.
The first British runner home in 30.51 was Salford's Tomas Abyu (10). Tomas had been training for a marathon overseas but decided not to partcipate in the event and came to Edinburgh to run. Second Brit was Jason Ward (11) from local club Altrincham in 30.53, third Gavin Thompson (12), Crawley in 30.54 and fourth British runner to finish was myself (14) in 31.05. Other local runners to finish were Gareth Raven (17) of Sale Hariers in 31.18.
Red Rose X-Country League Rossendale Saturday 16th December 2006 Andi Jones
In what could be the muddiest cross country race I have ever done, even muddier than the Northern Champs in Derby a few years ago and a race I once did in Brussels, Salford Harriers turned a few hardy soles out at the Red Rose XC League race in Rossendale. It was always tipped to be a fell runners course but only upon closer inspection did it become apparent that the course was all mud. And I mean deep, sticky, wet mud!
The mens race was won by myself in 29.22. After struggling with a cold in the previous days to the race it was being used as a training run. The conditions suited me well and I lead from the gun.
Johnny Gilby (Derby), who trains down at Salford Harriers, was second in 30.28, followed by Matt Barnes (Alty) in 30.29. Johnny and Matt were involved in a very close sprint finish which saw Johnny come out on top this time.
Fifth was Phil Leybourne (31.57), 12th Rob Hughes (33.21), 23rd Paul Birkett (34.53), which also saw Paul finish 3rd Vet 40 in this race, and in 31st place was Billy Martin in 35.46.
Well done to all those who ran and thanks to those who supported at the event. Lets hope the Northern XC champs in Heaton Park are just as muddy as this course was!!!!!!!!
Manchester X-Country League Boggart Hole Clough Saturday 18th November 2006
There was a home win in the mens race and strong support from others to ensure a team win. Our top five athletes came in the first twenty finishers.
Carl Hardman came through a good tussle with two Sale Harriers, dropping one before the last of three laps, and proving stronger in the finish. There were more fine performances slightly further down the field with Lee Dunn coming out of hiding to finish as third Salford counter directly behind Rob.
Phil, Paul, Billy, Dave, Sean, Jacko et al. ensured strong Salford representation throughout.
South East Lancs XC League Broad Oak, Ashton Saturday 11th November 2006
There was a good turn out from Salford Harriers male contingent on Saturday, and they put in a good performance resulting in a win in the team competition.
Individually there were some strong efforts with Matt Moorhouse in 3rd position, Rob Hughes in 4th, Phil West in 6th, Billy Martin in 11th, James Jackson in 20th and James Kovacs in 25th. There was further support from Mark Seed (27th), Dave Williams (38th), Paul Simons (42nd), Ian Jackson (54th), Dave Shaw (57th) and Kris Holbrook (73rd).
National XC Relays Mansfield Saturday 4th November 2006
Salford Harriers were well represented at the National Cross Country Relays in Mansfield by three mens teams and one ladies team. A few slight alterations to the teams were still being made as time approached for the starting gun to be fired.
Carl Hardman ran leg 1 for the A team and finished in 33rd position in a time of 15.46. This left the team chasing for the rest of the afternoon. Andi Jones, on leg 2, ran a reasonable leg in a time of 15.18 bring the team back up to 21st position. This was to be the highest position the team would be in all afternoon. Jones handed over to Tarus Elly who ran 16.37 and brought the team back in 26th position. Elly handed over to Tomas Abyu who recently represented Great Britain at the European Marathon Championships. Abyu ran a solid leg in 15.36 and finished the team in 20th position. The team under performed on what we were expecting, but intend to build upon this over the winter ready for greater success at the National Cross Country Championships in March 2007.
The B team came in a very creditable 36th. Phil West (17.01) handed over to Ray Edgar (16.43) and Rob Hughes (16.39). Matt Moorhouse moved us up from 54th place on the final leg.
The C team were 96th. Billy Martin (17.10) , Paul Birkett (17.11), Dave Shaw (19.14) and Chris Paul (21.21), who came out of semi-retirement to complete 3 full teams.
Winners of the relay were Newham and Essex Beagles in a time of 1.00.42, second Aldershot Farnham in 1.00.47 and third Tipton Harriers in 1.00.54. A very close ran relay all afternoon. First Northern club was Sale Harriers in 5th followed by Altincham & District in 7th.
Red Rose X-Country League Chesham, Bury Saturday 28th October 2006
On a damp, drizzly day at Chesham, Bury on an undulating course of parkland, we were treated to John Brown cruising round, nearly a minute ahead of Nick Leigh of Altrincham. John, who was making one of his final appearances before he goes off on his 6 month cycling trip to South America, reminded us of the young John who used to pulverise the opposition on his many wins of the local leagues. There is life in the old dog yet.
I thought we would have won the team race this time but once again Horwich beat us, they had 4 men in 9 and we had 2 men in 10. 1st John Brown 31.07, 10th Dave Milliken 33.06 (he was first vet) and closing him down in 12th place was Rob Hughes 33.23, 14th Phil West 33.36, who was first counter at the last Red Rose League, 20th Billy Martin 34.00 who had the scalp of Paul Birkett who was 21st 34.11. Mark Seed was 38th 35.38, Ian Johnson was 92nd in 39.38 and had a battle with Kris Holbrook in 99th, 40.07 who improved 23 places.
Manchester Area XC League Heaton Park Saturday 14th October 2006 Paul Birkett
A reasonable turn out at an unseasonably warm Heaton Park for the first fixture of the newly expanded Manchester Area XC League considering the fell relays and South East Lancs. League were all taking place on the same day. Dave Lockett was first Salford runner home, and first V40 in the race, in a very respectable 11th place. Dave assures me that he did not need to wrestle any fellow competitors to the floor in the home straight this week , but would have done so if required to.
Next came yours truly, running out of steam a bit on the last lap to finish in 16th position (more track sessions required? or less beer?), with Billy Martin putting in a good finish to come in 23rd. Paul Simons chatted his way round to an easy paced run (accompanied by James Jackson I think) with Dave Shaw and Ian Johnson the next counting Salford lads home. Kristian avoided leading over the first 100 m this week and put in a steady run coming home as enthusiastic as he was when he started.
Tom Daniels, Tony Smith and Sid Sacks (first V65 home I think) all finished successfully, helping the club gain second place in the vets team comp. and making up the full complement of Salford male runners. An honourable mention too for Aaron, running as a guest for Moston, producing a very respectable run.
Red Rose League Witton Park, Blackburn Saturday 7th October 2006
A good turn out for the start of the cross country season, the red rose league at Witton Park, Blackburn. Our best result was Tessa Walker finishing third in the ladies race (with 78 finishers). Salford's men finished second team (136 points) to Horwich (67 points) who had the first three finishers. Phil West was first counter in 11th (37.53), Dave Lockett 13th (38.00), Paul Birkett 18th (38.29), Billy Martin 23rd (39.17), James Kovacs 26th (39.37), James Williams 45th (41.16), Ian Johnson 86th, Kristian Holbrook 122nd, there were 174 finishers. Thanks for turning up and making it a successful start to the season.
43rd European Club XC Championships Cáceres, Spain 5th February 2006 Duncan Mason
We met up in Madrid on the Friday, Martin Cryer having flown in from London, piled into the hire car and set off. Missing the ring road, we headed through Madrid, seeing all the sights in rush hour (not to be recommended). We resisted the temptation of a smokey 'wild west' type bar at a stop off and arrived in Cáceres in time for tea. On Saturday we went to look at the course, and rested up well looked after in a nice hotel.
The race was on Sunday, it was a very high quality race, on a very fast flat course, like running a freshly mown golf course. It was an incredibly fast start. Jimmy and I were last for a while but everyone was satisfied with their efforts. It was certainly a lot nicer running in Spanish sunshine than that Blackburn mud.
After the race we finally had the chance to relax and had a good night out sampling the Spanish beers and bars in this medieval town. We travelled back on Monday stopping off for an hours run in the hilly Spanish countryside. I think that sleepy village is still trying to understand what we were doing striding out through their narrow streets! |
