The club is proud to be fielding two teams at the Northern 12 stage which is to be staged at Wythenshawe Park on Sunday 21st March. The mens race starts at 11.30am followed by the ladies race at 11.35am.

Inter-counties Cross Country Championships 2010

Ben Riddell and Joe Bailey enjoyed their first selections for Greater Manchester at the recent Inter Counties which were this year staged at Croften Park, Birmingham. Ben finished in 73rd position in 38.19 and Joe finished in 125th in 39.49. Hopefully this Greater Manchester selection is just the start of many more selections to come.

Club Awards 2009 Season

Saturday 6th February was our annual club presentation night, and was a huge success thanks to the hard work of everyone involved especially Ruth who did an oustanding job. Please find below report for another hugely succesfull season for club.

Annual Presentation Evening, 6th February 2010

According to our illustrious President this is the first time in 46 years of attending the presentation that we have had a live band to entertain us. The evening got of to a noisy start with organised games for the youngsters; these were followed by the presentation with the traditional raffle, live music, hot and cold buffet and then dancing through to midnight.
Presentations were made by the two Roy’s (Profitt & Standring) with Hilary directing operations.
Our male athlete of the Year was for the second successive year Andi Jones who continued his great form with a silver medal at the Northern Cross Country leading the men to the team silver. Andi had a fantastic run in the London Marathon winning the AAA individual title with a PB of 2.15.40 and was within the qualifying time required to run at the World Championships in Berlin. Andi also led the team of Tomas Abyu and James Kovacs home to win the AAA’s silver medal.
Female athlete of the year was Tess Walker who won the award not only for her outstanding achievements throughout 2009 - 1st Greater Manchester, 9th Northern’s, 23rd Nationals, 4th fastest female at the Northern Road Relays she has like Andi for the men done sterling work as Team Captain of the ladies.
Male vet was Vinnie Murphy for his persistence throughout the Road and XC seasons.
Julie Cook was Lady Vet easing her way back into form after her injury lay off.
Rob Hughes and Sam Briggs were our two most improved athletes with Sam winning the Manchester Area XC League on her first full season of running.
The Road Running Championships was won by Dave Lockett and Pat Curran
The Cross Country Championships was won by Sam Briggs and Jan Pichl
There was a Life membership presentation to Ruth Bardsley for her hard work both in running the ladies beginner class, organising club races and this evening’s presentation
Roy Profit received the Geoff Doggett Trophy for his largely unnoticed work as Club Historian. We noted on Friday through the website Roy received an enquiry from Canada ref world class Salford athlete from the period around 1898.
The final award went to Arthur Walsham in recognition of 60 years Club Membership and still running internationally today close on 80 with a record
which defies belief. Running 100/200yard in his early years progressing through to International Marathon Running (52 in total)

'Tess ends up in stitches'

Salford Harriers successfully fielded two teams in the Pennine Bridleway Relay for the first time. The mens A team were successfully second place to a strong team from Horwich. Starting the day off strong was Dave Lockett and Phil West who returned in 6th place. Andi Jones and John Brown set off hard on the second leg and managed to pull back all the teams except Horwich, but did manage to get the team within sight of Horwich asnd ran the quickest leg of the day on leg 2. Leg three was also ran the quickest on the day by James Kovacs and Rob Hughes. The two took the team in to the lead by the hand over to leg four. Dave Townsend and Jan Pichl had a good leg and were soon handing over to the two youngsters Ben Riddell and Joe Bailey but had lost a place and a few seconds to Horwich. After an icy start and a few falls they managed to return the team in second place which considering it was the clubs first outting in this event is very pleasing. Joe and Ben also ran the fastest leg of the day on leg 5.

The club fielded a mixed team who placed 44th out of 87 teams finishing. Unfortuately Tess 'The Fell Runner' Walker fell and spent the evening at hospital having stitches.

Salford bring home the Silver

Salford's mens team were out in force at a foggy Northern Cross Country Championships staged at Witton Park, Blackburn. Salford's mens team were looking to make an inpact upon the event and managed to get a good number of runners out. In the early stages of the race Salford's Andi Jones and Stockports Steve Vernon were leading the race. As the race progressed Vernon pushed on and gradually opened up a commanding gap over Jones and Bolton's Tom Lanchashire back in third place battling with Blackburn's Ben Fish. Vernon came home to win the Northern Cross Country title for a third time and becoming only the third man to retain the title in the history of the event. Andi Jones was clear in second and Tom Lancashire finished third. Finishing strongly in fourth place was Leigh's Pete Riely closely follwed by Ben Fish. Next Salford counter was 10th place Carl Hardman having an amazing run. Backing the team up and third counter was John Brown, 47th, who recently was first Vet 40 at the Helsby Half Marathon. Ben Riddell in his first Northern Cross finished 50th position, James Kovacs 57th and Joe Bailey 63rd.
The team prize was won in great style by Leeds City, with Salford 2nd and Altrincham 3rd.
The National Cross Country Championships is on Saturday 27th February at Roundhey Park, Leeds.

Northern Cross-Country Championships - Women's Race

Northern Cross-Country Championships, Witton Park, Blackburn. Saturday 24th January.

A solid performance by the women's team brought the Salford Ladies team home in 10th position today (beating the next team Stockport Harriers by 95 points). The team was led home by Sam Briggs in her debut run at the Northerns in a fantastic 18th place, Estelle Malm also had a really strong first race of the season finishing in 28th position. The team was completed by Anneka Sanders (124th) and Anna Weaver (143rd). Lizzy Adams also had a good run in her first ever cross-country championships finishing 203rd (this is a mistake in the results as she was down as Jane Bilton!). Well done to the girls on a very very tough course today. We are now looking forward to the Nationals in Leeds.

The team is very strong for this event and with the positive team spirit we have we should be looking at bringing back medals. The course is slightly different to that used a few years ago when Andi Jones won his first Northern XC title, but still contains the big hills.

Sam has a great start to 2010

New club runner Sam Briggs had a fantastic run on Sunday 3rd January in the Manchester Cross-Country League at Woodbank Park, Stockport. Sam took the lead in the race half way round and was just beaten on the last climb before the finish. Finishing in second position is Sam's strongest performance so far this season having finished 5th at Sherdley Park in November and 6th at The Clough in December. The girls team are now looking forward to the Greater Manchester Cross-Country Championships next weekend. Bailey Sets Huge PB at Ribble Valley 10k

Salford mens team won Silver North of England Team medals at the Ribble Valley 10k strongly backed up with a huge personal best by Joe Bailey who ran 31 minutes dead.
In a strong field of athletes from across the country on a very cold day in the Ribble Valley the winner, Tom Lancashire, Bolton Harriers, set a new course record in 29.21. Blackburn athlete Ben Fish was second pipping Liverpools Jonny Mellor on the line who finished third. Fourth was Altrincham athlete Matt Barnes, followed by Luke Cragg and Dave Norman. In 7th place and first Salford Harrier home was Andi Jones in 29.53. Carl Hardman ran a solid race to finish in 18th place in 30.49 followed by Joe Bailey in 22nd place, 31.00, to set a big PB. Fourth Salford runner home in a new PB of 31.59 was Paul Savage. Other Salford runners out today were Dave Locket (66th 33.37), Mike Deagan (87th 35.30) and first vet 50 home and Sean Cordell (149th, 38.02)
First lady home was Helen Clitheroe in 32.53.

2009 Christmas Handicap (Results)

The Christmas Handicap was won by Dennis Moran closely followed by Sean Cordell with Sid Sacks in third. There was quite a low turnout, but the 14 who braved the elements acquitted themselves ably with amongst the highlights being Bev appearing as Santa (including the proverbial ample tummy of course) and Gary Thomason dressed as something completely different!!!

Calderdale Way Champions (Again!)

Salford Harriers managed to retain the Calderdale Way Relay trophy for the second year running.

The event wasn't all Salford Harriers own way but the team pulled together, and with the strong support and encouragement on route managed to finish on top.

Your best five results out of the Greater Manchester League, Greater Manchester XC Championships and Northern XC Championships will be taken for the final league standing.
Prizes will be awarded to top three men and ladies and 1st V40, V60.
